Buying or selling a home is an important and often life-changing process for anyone. What most people tend to forget is that it is also a very confusing and stressful time for their pets too.

Being a responsible pet owner during this process is crucial to making sure your pet doesn't get negatively affected or impacted. Many pet owners who aren't careful at this stage often end up surrendering their pet to the pound or leaving them behind when moving.

However, there are easy ways to be a more responsible pet owner during the home buying or selling process that are outlined in this post.

Stay Positive

When we move houses, it can be daunting, stressful, frustrating, and a combination of many other emotions. Our pets can understand this and they often reciprocate these same feelings.

By staying positive and treating the process as an exciting one, you can avoid stressing your pet out, and make the buying and selling process much more comfortable for the both of you.

Plan Ahead

Planning and being prepared is critical when moving, as most of us know. But it becomes even more important when you own a pet.

When planning ahead for the big move, you should consider doing several things for your pet, some of which include:

  • Organizing your pet to stay safely at a friends house for the day (or booking them into boarding)

  • Taking your pet to experience the new area you will be living in

  • Buy an adequate & comfortable travel carrier for your pet

  • Update your pet's identification tag with the new address details

Keep Them Secure

Keeping your animal secure is another important part of moving.

It's crucial to keep your property secure during this stressful time to prevent any unwanted escapes, as many dogs are famous for. Dogs also become more inclined to escape when they are in unfamiliar territory.

Furthermore, depending on the type of pet that you own, you should introduce them slowly and carefully to the new area. Cats, for example, adjust more slowly to new territories than dogs do, and should be kept confined for several days before letting them go outside.

Pets need time to adjust to their new surroundings, so it's important to keep them as secure as possible until they feel comfortable in their new home.

Buy Wisely

The last tip we want to point out is to buy wisely when choosing a new home. Often, pet owners will buy a home without considering the needs of their pets.

When buying, keep your pet's current and future needs in mind - can they walk up the stairs inside the new home? Is there a pool where your pet could fall into and not get out of? Is there a very busy road nearby?

When you take up ownership of a pet, you are taking up a big responsibility, and when you move houses, it's equally as important not to neglect this responsibility.

If you want to make sure your pet is as comfortable as possible throughout this difficult time, try keeping these solutions in mind when buying or selling a home.
